Despite a hectic travel schedule, Shaun White takes time to Tweet and Facebook to keep his fans updated on his life. Even though Shaun White is one of the most recognizable athletes around — and not just because of his bright red hair — he’s a pretty normal 24-year-old who enjoys hanging with his buddies.

While the gold medalist (he was the first person to win gold at both the Summer and Winter X Games and he has two Olympic gold medals) clinched some big wins on the Dew Tour this past summer, his favorite memories have nothing to do with a board, be it a snowboard or a skateboard.

“Winning the events were amazing, but the things that stick out in my mind the most were the random things I got to do with my friends, like white water rafting in Oregon,” Shaun said during an interview with The Parents Handbook.

Shaun first strapped on a snowboard at Big Bear in California when he was 6-years old. Soon after, he was following his big brother, Jesse, off jumps, and developing the fearless nature that he’s used to push the boundaries of both skateboarding and snowboarding. Shaun’s bold ways were certainly on display during the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games when he busted out the Double McTwist 1260 and took home another golden souvenir.

While Shaun admits he’s already thinking about the 2014 Olympics, he’s trying to stay in the moment and focus on this coming season. He’s gearing up to launch his Oakley Air & Style event at the Olympic Sports Center Stadium in Beijing on December 4. “I’ve never been to China,” Shaun said, “so I’m excited to go to a new place and show my support.”

The next big thing on Shaun’s agenda brings him to Colorado, specifically to the Winter X Games in Aspen taking place January 27-30, 2011. From there Shaun will compete at events around the country before heading back east to Vermont for the Burton U.S. Open at Stratton Mountain.

Snowboarding star answers Colorado kids questions:

Andres, age 11, from Eagle: Who is your biggest rival?
Shaun White: The world! Haha. I think it’s me, I’m always trying to one up what I did the year before.

Heather, 12, from Basalt: Would you rather be skateboarding or snowboarding?
SW: Skateboarding, because I don’t get to do it that often.

Martin, age 9, from Vail: What advice do you have for a 9-year-old that wants to be a snowboard champ?
SW: Have a good time when you’re snowboarding! Really focus on your riding and everything else will come.

Eric, age 13, from Aspen: What do you do when you’re not practicing or competing?
SW: I work on my clothing and shoe line with Target, I do video games with Ubisoft, and I have an awesome new sunglass line with Oakley. Those are all cool side projects that need my time, but my favorite is playing guitar.

Liz, age 7, from Frisco: When you were a little kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
SW: I’m pretty sure I wanted to be a gladiator or a Ninja Turtle. But, I always knew I wanted to be a snowboarder.

Daniel, age 15, from Conway, NH: Where will you be practicing for the upcoming snowboard season?
SW: I’ll probably hit up Big Bear, Park City and Colorado.

(WILLISTON, VT) – Quality eyewear is particularly important for children because most kids spend more time outdoors than adults do.

The American Optometric Association emphasizes the importance of getting children sunglasses that block 99- to 100-percent of the sun’s damaging UVA and UVB rays. According to the AOA, the earlier children begin wearing sunglasses outdoors, the better their chances of avoiding eye health problems, such as cataracts, later in life.

“UV protection for the eyes is as important or more important than UV protection for our skin,” said Opticus Inc. owner Fred Seitzman, an expert optician who specializes in eye protection for the athletes and explorers.

Seitzman cautions that eye damage from consistent UV exposure often goes unnoticed, because, unlike a sunburn, it’s usually painless. “For this reason, it is important to instill in our children the need to have and wear quality sunglasses when exposed to the sun for significant periods of time,” Seitzman said, “especially at higher altitudes or in areas of concentrated reflection such as beaches, lakes and ski areas.”

With this in mind, Julbo, the leading manufacturer of eyewear for highaltitude mountaineering and glacier exploration, has developed a line of affordable, durable, 100-percent UVprotective eyewear made specifically for children from infants to teens.
