What is Sexting?

Sexting is the act of sending
sexually explicit messages or photos electronically, primarily between cell phones and other mobile devices.

How common is sexting?
Some 20 percent of teens admit to participating in sexting, according to a nationwide survey by the National Campaign to Support Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy.

How does sexting affect youth?
With the rise of social networking tools like Facebook and Twitter, and more time on their hands during summer vacation, teens are able to retreat into their own digital worlds.

Many teens say their parents are unaware of their online activities. It’s important for parents to take the time to learn about the many online dangers teens are exposed to on a regular basis to effectively keep them out of harm’s way.

Unwanted photos or videos showing teens in undesirable activities can easily be posted on sites like YouTube or MySpace and have lasting consequences.

Tips to Prevent Sexting
• Think about the consequences of taking, sending or forwarding a sexual picture of someone underage, even if it’s of you. You could get kicked off of sports teams, face humiliation, lose educational opportunities and even get in trouble with the law.
• Never take images of yourself that you wouldn’t want everyone
— your classmates, your teachers, your family or your employers —
to see.
• Before hitting send, remember that you can’t control where this image may travel. What you send to a boyfriend or girlfriend could easily end up with their friends, and their friends, and their friends…
• Report any nude pictures you receive on your cell phone to an adult you trust. Do not delete the message. Instead, get your parents or guardians, teachers and school counselors involved immediately.

The VMS Family

by Holly Domke
Essay written by Holly Domke ’10 as part of her application for Vail Mountain School’s Alumni Scholarship Award, with which she was honored in 2009.

Holly is a senior at Vail Mountain School. She will be attending Cornell University in the fall to major in civil engineering.

Every Monday at 3:15 p.m., I grab a pencil and a calculator to meet Colby ’16 in the library. She usually beats me there and waits patiently with a grin on her face, math books strewn across the table. The first day, she introduced herself by saying, “Hi! I’m Colby, and I hate math.” I laughed inwardly at her dejected defiance of one of my favorite subjects, and set a goal to make math fun and easy for her, possibly sparking a future passion. I have tutored Colby for two years and our relationship has developed far beyond fractions and multiplication. She is hardly ever behind on math work now, and even seems to enjoy its challenges. Often we end up talking about theater, life, anything that comes to mind while she moves undauntedly through her homework problems.

These types of cross-age relationships help define Vail Mountain School. To me, VMS is more of a family than a school. The interest and goodwill of every person within the community are abundantly evident: teachers are friendly collaborators rather than lecturers; peers are eager teammates instead of competitors. The atmosphere at VMS is intellectually-driven. It is not uncommon to walk past a teacher and student discussing a math problem or historical event. The enthusiastic, supportive environment at VMS is one I will forever cherish.

When I first came to VMS in sixth grade — as much as I wanted to fix what I saw as wrong in the world — I did not believe that any individual alone could affect change.  Luckily, VMS has transformed my perspective. When I see Colby succeed in math, I know that I have made a difference in her education. Last year, I was given another opportunity to affect change through the school’s “Ethically Engaged Youth” program when I travelled to Nepal for three weeks.  Initially, the trip was overwhelming — it was mentally taxing to see so many people in such abject conditions.  I knew this seemingly desolate situation could not be easily solved by my usual tangible way of tackling problems.  However, once my mind adjusted, I saw a window of opportunity: there was hope. I was inspired to learn about the hydroelectric potential of Nepal, seeing a way to positively affect and assist a society half a world away. I will be majoring in civil engineering in college, based on the inspiration that I do have the power to make a difference.

VMS has helped me gain self-confidence that I will employ for the rest of my life. The school has always encouraged me to meet opposition strongly, develop my own thoughts, and pursue what is important to me. Moreover, I’ve been armed with an ethically informed, intellectually aware perspective. Moving into the future,
I am ready academically and emotionally to make my mark on the world. I feel prepared to take on whatever academic or personal challenges I encounter. I cannot wait to explore the opportunities ahead, and I will always attribute my readiness to the incredible energy, support, and preparation I have received at Vail Mountain School.
